Deciding to take a gap year in medical school, Brian thought he could learn more by interviewing culturally-diverse inhabitants of New York City. His key question for them was, “Do you think your doctor cares?” With an enduring passion for videography and the human story, the responses he receives ignites the spark that sends him on a cross-country road trip.
This is Brian’s epic adventure through the mid-Atlantic, Deep South, Central South, Midwest, Southwest, the Rocky Mountains, Pacific Northwest – from sea to shining sea – and across the border to Canada. Along the way, he captures beautiful landscapes and cultures that delicately open the doors to solving the riveting riddle of how we must address medicine in 2020.
He interviews over a hundred people – pedestrians, healthcare workers, physicians, public health experts – about the multitude of ways the American healthcare system affects their daily lives. He draws comparisons to the kind of medicine his grandmother practiced back in Poland. Discussions range from costs of personal treatment, to research advances, vaccine education, the opioid epidemic, physician shortage, physician suicide, rights for abortion, gender, lifestyle considerations, and other barriers to optimal care.
This film serves as a catalyst toward a healthier nation by exposing the plethora of health disparities encountered in this country. It serves to represent all voices from all backgrounds, and Brian is our messenger. The goal of this film is to not only show the reality of suffering in the United States, but to instill hope for the future. Together, we will create better, more affordable, more accessible, healthcare for all. We just have to listen.
