Right before this parable begins Jesus says this, “Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.” Then he follows it up by saying that not everyone who calls his name will be in the Kingdom of Heaven. It’s a chilling statement made by the God who loves us deeply, but also ultimately judges us. We know that we can rest safe in Jesus’ atonement for our sins, yet God still calls us to be true followers by obeying his commands.
We cannot be Christians in name only, we must be Christians in our actions. Actions are what brings true power to our words. You can fool everyone around you and even yourself, but God will not be fooled. He sees every action, good and bad, and it’s intent. He sees even the most well masked heart for what it really is and he brings justice as a result. What if you were not able to speak a word about your faith, or post your beliefs on social media or label yourself Christian in any way? Would your actions alone show that you are a Christ follower? And more importantly, would God see a heart with pure intentions?
