Well, we’ve gone for a somewhat livelier song on our latest recording, more ‘Electric Chemistry’ than ‘Acoustic Chemistry’!
I can clearly remember the first time I heard this song in 1985, and being absolutely blown away by it. I thought it was the best sounding record I’d ever heard, and I still do think it sounds fabulous, even now 35 years on.
It had a big impact on me; the noise and the sight of Billy Duffy banging this riff out on a huge white Gretsch Falcon guitar, blond quiff skyward, I thought was the coolest thing ever. It inspired me to buy an electric guitar and form a band and it became a regular in our set. I have very fond memories of playing this on stage, bass pounding through the chest, cymbals crashing and guitars ringing.
When Deb suggested tackling it I was genuinely delighted. I’m an old codger now but playing this song again has transported me back to the energy and passion I felt as a younger man.
It’s a hugely nostalgic song for me (hence the photo references in the video) and I don’t think I’ll ever tire of hearing this simple yet gloriously joyous musical celebration, and what must surely be one of the great guitar sounds in modern rock.
This then is our little homage to the brilliant ‘She Sells Sanctuary’ by The Cult!
