4개의 시 / 4 poems was specifically made for the Composer’s Festival Amsterdam 2019, the graduation platform of the composition department at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. The framework of the work is based on the Korean Presbyterian services I used to attend as a child. The religious service portrayed in this piece however is fake and staged, with a few members of a nameless governing body present to ensure smooth broadcasting…
The poems themselves are as follows:
This could also be seen as: sermon, religious song, statement of belief, and prayer.
The first poem lays the thematic groundwork, with the following three poems being three different illustrations. “13childrenrushdownastreet” is the first line of the first poem from Korean poet Yi Sang’s (1910-1937) set of poetry titled Crow’s Eye View (published 1934). Yi Sang spent his whole life during the Japanese occupation of Korea, and passed away in Japan after having been imprisoned for “subversive thought”. A particularly striking feature of this poem is the image of 13 children all the same (frightened/frightening), and stripped of individuality. This state of being deprived of one’s identity (whether by another or caused by one’s indifference to themselves) is an important aspect of the whole piece.
